Dallas man indicted after police say he killed friend while taking apart loaded gun
A 20-year-old Dallas man was charged with manslaughter after police alleged he fatally shot a friend while drinking and dismantling a gun in his apartment in far northeast Dallas.
A Dallas County grand jury last week brought charges against Brandon Eugene Lawellin in connection with the death of 22-year-old Colton Mach.
According to a warrant affidavit, Mach went to Lawellin’s apartment on the 9800 block of Pinyon Tree Road on the evening of October 14. The two were drinking, police said, and Lawellin planned how quickly to disassemble and reassemble his Glock.
While Lawellin disassembled the pistol, he pulled the trigger without realizing that he had left a loaded magazine in the gun, the affidavit said. The bullet hit Mach in the upper body.
Police said Lawellin called 911 to report the shooting and that he and a witness tried to provide Mach first aid until the Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived.
Mach was taken to a hospital where he died.
Lawellin was sent to Dallas County Jail the day after the shooting and was later released on bail of $ 10,000, court records show.
