Dallas Farmers Market Has the Goods to Build a Perfect Cheese Board

While sausage boards were one of the biggest food trends of 2020, cheese boards with or without charcuterie are more than a current trend in Dallas.
The Libertine Bar’s cheese platter first appeared on our list of 100 favorite dishes in 2010 and is still on the menu at the Greenville Avenue waterhole.
The popularity shows no signs of decline either. Just last month, Amor y Queso opened in Deep Ellum, a new store specializing in boards and boxes of all types and sizes.
We now have more options than ever to make our own cheese boards too. Whether you’re stocking your plate with goods from JImmy’s Food Store and Pickletopia, or wandering the wonderland of Eataly, you can choose from an endless number of cheeses, meats, and pieces of equipment.
If you want to make your shopping experience memorable while putting together a memorable cheese board, spend some time at the Dallas Farmers Market and choose from the local goods on offer there.

The Scardello Artisan Cheese Shop in the Market Shops is of course a must. You can buy a variety of full cheese plates and add meat, mustard, and more.
For the do-it-yourself option, choose a few cheeses from a wide selection of Texas-made and native varieties. The meat crate offers coppa, soppressata, and various other smoked pork. With jams, nuts, bean-to-bar chocolate and more, Scardello has everything you need to make a great cheese board from a single source.
However, more stops are more fun. So don’t skip a trip to the stalls at The Shed, the open-air covered market that’s currently open on weekends. The supply of vendors in The Shed varies seasonally and from week to week. However, look for these stalls for a selection of goods that will make your cheese board great.
Greens from the Bonton Farms can brighten up your board, and they also provide handy camouflage for hiding any cheese you might want to eat yourself.
Add some texture and color to your board with cauliflower, red sail lettuce and rainbow chard, or other fresh vegetables from Bonton Farms. Coriander, parsley, and fresh herbs are also great additions the south Dallas farm has on their stall on Saturdays.
All organic ingredients, D’s? Whatever. Give me give me give me
You want some bread to go with your cheese, and at D’s Breads you can find different types of artisanal sourdough bread made from organic ingredients. Whole grain wheat, salted rosemary, and sowed Jewish rye are just a few of the options, all of which have been sold exclusively at the Dallas Farmers Market for over six years.
Most breads are vegan, while pastries that sell out early in the day are made with locally grazed eggs and organic butter.
A touch of citrus, courtesy of G&S Groves, makes an ideal addition to cheese and bread.
The stalls at The Shed only sell seasonal produce from Texas or 400 miles from Dallas. Fortunately, January brings us oranges and grapefruits that are organically grown by G&S Groves. The fresh citrus fruits grown on two small family farms in South Texas add visual interest and contrasting flavor to your cheese board.
Ray Zies of the Rockin JR Ranch is probably smiling under his mask. If your jams and jellies were praised by Oprah it would bring a smile to everyone’s face.

If you visit the market regularly, you can even spot Ray Zies from the Rockin JR Ranch in his mask. You can expect him to smile while filling the booth with jams and jellies because he’s had a lot to smile about lately. The company’s spicy gift set in Buffalo, Texas was one of Oprah’s favorite items in 2020.
This gift set includes strawberry jalapeño and peach raspberry habanero jams, both of which add a welcome combination of sweetness and flavor to an assortment of cheeses. You can also choose from more than a dozen other flavors, including wine and cocktail flavored jellies.
Round stone honey
On any given day, you’re likely to find more than one honey seller, but Round Rock Honey’s wildflower honey might be the best. Traditional honey goes great with cheese and the flavors of orange cinnamon and bourbon barrels make your board a distinctive addition.
Get adventurous with different varieties of locally grown Texas Fungus mushrooms.
At the Texas Fungus stand, you can typically find three to five varieties of mushrooms freshly picked from their Arlington farm. Lion’s Mane, Golden and Italian Oyster Mushrooms are just a few of the varieties with unique flavors that will add value to your board.

Tree and hatchet
If you need something to serve your cheese, look for the booth of Tree and Hatchet, a Denton company that makes handcrafted home decor and custom furniture. Your cutting boards, butcher’s blocks, and serving trays could be the perfect base to build your board on.
In addition to these options, you can also find root vegetables and tomatoes, microgreens, goat cheese, hummus, olives, nuts, cucumbers and more for your board when you visit the stalls at The Shed.
To keep your visit safe, sellers and visitors must wear masks and keep their distance. There are several hand washing stations on site.
