Fourth of July: Dallas adds road closures, celebratory gunfire ban

This Fourth of July weekend, the Dallas Police Department will try a new strategy to increase safety and stop traffic gridlock across the city.The need for change was clear after drivers parked directly on the highway to watch fireworks for New Year's Eve, snarling traffic and preventing emergency vehicles from moving around.Illegal Fireworks and Random Gunfire ConcernsDallas police will put more officers in some neighborhoods where there are safety concerns, rolling out a plan to crack down on celebratory gunfire. The clear message from officials is, "Don't do it."There have been more than 12,000 calls for random gunfire in Dallas this year alone. Between July 1 and July 5 of last year, there were over 5,700 calls for random gunfire.Many of those calls came from the Highland Hills area in Oak Cliff. Dallas police searching for suspects after 1 person shot in South Oak Cliff

Dallas police are searching for two men after another man was shot outside an apartment complex in South Oak Cliff Thursday night.Authorities said the man was picking up a friend at the St. James apartment complex on Easter Avenue when he was approached by two men who they believe were trying to rob him.The victim tried to get away from the men when at least one of them started shooting.The victim was struck in the leg and was later taken to an area hospital.Police said another car with two women and two children was hit by gunfire, but no one was injured.Police have not released information on the suspects.

3 injured in downtown Dallas motorcycle crash

Dallas police are investigating after three people were injured when a car struck a motorcycle downtown early Friday morning.Dallas firefighters responded to Main Street and North Harwood Street just after 3 a.m. Friday where they found a collision involving a motorcycle and a car.Authorities said the man driving the motorcycle was seriously injured. The woman riding with him was critically injured and taken to an area hospital.Police said the motorcycle was attempting to turn on Harwood Street from Main Street when it was hit by a car.The driver of the car had injuries that were described as minor and was taken to an area hospital. The two passengers inside the car were not injured.Police are looking through surveillance video and speaking with witnesses to determine what led to the crash.
