Dallas County is reporting its first human case of the West Nile virus for the season.First Human WNV CaseDallas County Health and Human Services said the patient is a Dallas resident in their early 50s who was diagnosed with the neuroinvasive form of the disease, which is the more severe.No details about the patient’s identity were released to protect their privacy.There have been 167 positive mosquito samples in Dallas County so far this season.In 2025, the county reported 10 human cases of West Nile with one death."Our first human case is an important reminder that West Nile virus is still active here in Dallas County," said Dr. Philip Huang, Director of DCHHS. "Take a few minutes to protect yourself from mosquito bites, especially when spending time outdoors."West Nile VirusThe neuroinvasive form of West Nile Virus typically has symptoms that include fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, or paralysis. It can be life-threatening.

It's that time of year again, with students at Dallas ISD schools returning to class for the 2026-27 school year.Dallas ISD first day of classToday is the first day of school for nearly 130,000 students in Dallas ISD, and it comes with notable changes across the district.The district is starting a new student badge system, with each student's ID now including services for transportation, meals, library checkouts and athletic events in the district.Dallas ISD is also making Pre-K services for three-year-old and four-year-old students free, regardless of the family's income. Previously, those services were only offered to students with a family income below a certain level.District leaders hope the program will help increase enrollment. Texas congresswoman Veronica Escobar said the federal government was planning to sell three warehouses outside of El Paso that were originally intended to be used as detention centers for U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement.The federal government purchased the warehouses in Socorro last year for nearly $123 million to convert them into detention centers that would hold up to 8,500 immigrants awaiting deportation.Escobar on Tuesday said the warehouses were transferred to the General Services Administration."This means the warehouses will be put up for sale, and they will no longer be used by the federal government for detention purposes," Escobar said.Escobar said the decision for ICE to leave the area would help the community with its plans to grow."The community of Socorro has been working on an economic development vision and plan to grow their economy while embracing their rich history," Escobar said.
